HKM Closes Furnace A: Which Steel Records Will Fastener Buyers Need?
Salzgitter announced on September 21 that Blast Furnace A at HKM in Duisburg has closed after more than 53 years of production.
Construction of a new electric arc furnace began in August. Salzgitter plans completion in 2029, with capacity up to 2.5 million metric tons per year. The project has €200 million in federal and North Rhine-Westphalia funding. Blast Furnace B remains in service through the transition.
The notice does not state a change to wire rod, fastener grades, pricing, supply or product carbon footprint.
Editorial analysis: a steel-route change creates a traceability question before any commercial claim reaches a customer. Procurement and quality teams can map material declarations to supplier, heat, mill certificate, conversion route and customer carbon-data request. They can identify documents for each product family and test whether lot records link raw material to finished fastener.
